Transitions in the Workplace

Change is inevitable, whether it be personal change or a shift in the workplace, your environment will never cease to constantly evolve. Transitions in the workplace can take many forms. They can come in the form of a relocation to a new city, a promotion, or a move to a new company. These employee transition can cause a lot of stress on the employee. Even though each transition is unique to the work environment you are in, there are a few strategic processes leaders can use in order to help individuals embrace the change.

  1. Believe in the Change. Ensure that you always have a positive outlook on why the transition is happening, whether it is because of necessity or innovation, having constant support for why it is happening is important. you must lead by example in order for your employees to have the same outlook.
  2. Identify Your Supporters and Manage Resisters. Supporters of the transition should include those in leadership as well as the most respected staff members. Identify those who are against the transition early on and have an open and honest conversation with them to identify their reservations. This feedback will help you throughout the transition in dealing with their concerns about the future.
  3. Coaching Through the Transition Period. Coaching can play an important role in supporting your employees through the transition. By coaching your employees, you can ensure that they move form a state of resistance and into an informed state of acceptance and involvement.
